The venue for this year’s Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final supported by The R&A, T Golf & Country Club, provides a rigorous test for even the most talented golfers. Let’s look at some of the key holes that could be crucial in crowning our champion this week…
Hole Ten
The par four tenth hole is one of T Golf’s most exciting and challenging golf holes with the ability to make or break a round. The positioning of the tee shot is crucial and the most adventurous can take out the 90-degree dogleg right with an aggressive drive but must ensure they carry the large lake and avoid the two bunkers at the end of the fairway. Alternatively, players strategically positioning their tee shot down the middle of the fairway will be left with a long iron into the green, and they will have to avoid the lake on the right, bunker at the back and out of bounds on the left.
In the 2020 Grand Final, there were only 11 birdies on the tenth hole across the week, proving just how difficult the first hole after the turn really is.
Hole Two
The par five second hole at T Golf proved to be crucial in 2020 Champion Ondrej Lieser securing the Grand Final title and subsequently topping the Road to Mallorca Rankings. The Czech played the second hole four under par over the four days, including an eagle three in round two.
To have a chance of making eagle it is essential the tee shot is positioned down the right side of the fairway, as anything on the left side will prevent players accessing the green with their second shot. Bunkers on the front right and back left protect the green but with a cleverly thought-out strategy, this hole is an excellent scoring opportunity.
Hole Three
The third hole proved to be the most challengeing for Lieser in 2020, carding two bogeys and two pars in his four rounds. There is no hiding place from the tee, as too far left, the lake comes into play, and too far right, players will have to avoid two bunkers that disrupt the fairway. The approach shot is played into an elevated green surrounded by bunkers. Due to the hazards mentioned, par is a good score on this hole.
Hole 18
The par five 18th hole at T Golf is the grand finale, with jaw-dropping views over the high Galatzo mountain. It provides the stage for heroes to emerge as longer hitters can reach the green in two to set up an eagle opportunity, but they must be cautious of the three lakes to the left which run alongside the fairway and the length of the green.
Lieser spectacularly birdied the 18th on the final day in 2020 to move one-stroke clear of current Rankings leader Santiago Tarrio and secure the Grand Final title.
