Marcel Schneider charged to the top of the leaderboard while a local amateur impressed on day one of the 2025 Austrian Alpine Open presented by SalzburgerLand.

Here is everything you need to know from round one at Gut Altentann Golf Club.

Schneider makes excellent eagle on way to the top

Starting from the tenth tee, Schneider made five birdies before the turn to join early clubhouse leader Nicolai von Dellingshausen at the summit on five under par. He then proceeded to hole his approach shot from the fairway at the second for a remarkable eagle, using the backstop to the right of the hole brilliantly, to hit the front on his own. A bogey on the sixth dropped him to six under but he got the shot back on the par-five ninth to lead by two on seven under after his opening 63. He said: "At the second hole, off the tee I thought I was a touch left but it ended up in the fairway and then it was a perfect yardage for my 60 degree wedge. Lucky enough it finished in the hole."

Green staff praised by the pros

With the host venue getting more than its fair share of wet weather ahead of the tournament, the players were quick to congratulate green staff for their efforts to get the course ready. Von Dellingshausen, who shot an opening 65, said: "It’s very soft and when you walk the fairways you’re thinking you need to find a dry spot somewhere, then you find it, hit it on the green, walk on the green and realise it’s really good. It’s pretty dry and the greens are rolling amazingly nice. Congratulations to the greenskeepers for the job they did with the greens." Nicolas Colsaerts, also on five under, said: "Most of us in the afternoon were curious to see how the course would hold up. If you look at how wet the course is and how battered it has been the last two days, you couldn’t dream of putting on better greens considering the conditions." Aaron Cockerill, who made a four-under-par 66, said: "Surprised we were playing this morning. I thought we’d be starting about now. Happy to have gotten it in and played well."

                    'You beauty!'

Julien Brun judged his tricky chip from the bank above the fourth green to perfection, holing it for a bonus birdie. And it got the seal of approval from the commentary box.
