U.S. Open - Day three digest

Everything you need to know from the third round at Oakmont Country Club.

Scott

There was no change at the top but the chasing pack piled on the pressure on day three of the 2025 U.S. Open.

Here is everything you need to know from the third round at Oakmont Country Club.

Excellent Burns stays in front

Sam Burns remains the man to catch heading into the final round but he will have fellow American JJ Spaun and Major Champion Adam Scott breathing down his neck on Sunday. Burns held a one-shot advantage at the halfway stage and although he surrendered the outright lead to Spaun early in round three, he finished the day back on top after shooting a 69 that contained three birdies and two bogeys. The 2023 Ryder Cup player sits at four under par, one shot ahead of 2013 Masters Champion Scott and first-round leader Spaun in a tie for second.

Spaun in a class of his own

Playing in the final group, Spaun achieved something no-one else had managed before him on Saturday when he birdied the first hole. He sent his 16-foot putt trickling towards the hole and watched on as it disappeared into the cup.

MacIntyre in the mix

Scotland's Robert MacIntyre shot a third-round 69 to sit within striking distance of Burns with 18 holes remaining. MacIntyre had described his level-par 70 on Thursday as one of the best rounds of his career but he bettered it just 48 hours later with his first under-par round of the week to get to three over. Asked if he can win, MacIntyre replied: "One hundred per cent. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t believe that, it’s a simple answer, yes."

Back-nine brilliance from Scott

Scott, looking for his second Major title and first in 12 years, gave himself every chance with a magnificent performance on the back nine on Saturday. After turning in 35, the Australian made birdies at the 13th, 14th and 17th to sign for a 67 and reach three under par.

Neergaard-Petersen's birdie burst

U.S. Open debutant Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen did not get off to the best of starts on day three, dropping shots at the first and third. But his round sprang to life after that as he reeled off four birdies in a row from the fourth to surge into contention. The talented Dane heads into the final round on two over after signing for his second 69 of the week.
