Amateur Hugo Townsend puts on a show in front of dad

Amateur Hugo Townsend carded a brilliant closing 64 in his first professional event at the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed to delight the local crowds - including Ryder Cup star dad Peter.

Townsend Snr represented Great Britain and Ireland in the Ryder Cup in 1969 and 1971, winning five times on the European circuit before the formation of the DP World Tour in 1972, where he would be a regular for a decade.

Swede Hugo - who represents the country of his mother Sofia - was born three years before Peter won his first and only event on the Legends Tour at the 2002 Royal Westmoreland Barbados Open and has taken after his father inside the ropes.

Now playing at the University of Mississippi in the United States after graduating from Boise State, he represented the International team at the 2021 Arnold Palmer Cup and was part of the Sweden team that finished second at last year's European Amateur Team Championship.

The 24-year-old is now back in Sweden for the summer and admitted it was special to play on home soil and in front of his dad again.

"He was here watching, he hasn't seen me play in five years, it was cool and special," he said.

"It's my first pro event ever, the first event I've played in Sweden in probably five years. It's awesome, it's cool. I've only been home for two weeks and it's a good start to the summer."

Playing alongside Eddie Pepperell - who carded a 65 - Townsend made eight birdies in a bogey-free round to finish at 12 under and he enjoyed teeing it up with the two-time DP World Tour winner.

"It was a lot of fun," he said. "We had a good time feeding off each other, he was playing great.

"I was holing some putts, hitting some good irons so it was a really fun day.

"It was a blast and a lot of fun to play with him. He's a very good guy and a good player so it was cool learning things from him."
