Jorge Campillo was enjoying the tough, windy conditions as he carded a 69 on day two of the 2021 Mallorca Golf Open to be part of a strong home charge at Golf Santa Ponsa.
The two time European Tour winner shot under par on a day when scoring was far more difficult than in the opening round to join countrymen Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez and Alvaro Quiros at seven under.
While Garcia Rodriguez and Quiros are battling to keep their playing privileges, Campillo's exemption is safe thanks to his win at last season's Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.
But despite not having that pressure on his shoulders, the 35-year-old is determined to make it three European Tour wins on Sunday.
"I like playing in the wind, I don't like the rain, but it didn't rain, so it was perfect," he said.
"I knew it was going to be tougher but I kind of like it. The course is playing tougher but I didn't do anything different, you've just got to be more focused and pay more attention to the wind. Beside that, it's pretty much the same.
"Hopefully I can keep hitting it as good as I am, make a few putts and give myself a chance on Sunday. That would be nice."
Quiros has seen it all before in his 330 European Tour appearances, claiming six wins in five seasons from 2007 before losing his card and then regaining it in style by winning the 2017 Rocco Forte Open - Verdura, Sicily.
"With this strong wind you need to think more of the trajectory and different shapes," he said after his 69. "It is pushing you to play certain shots at times.
"A golf tournament is four rounds, not only one or two, so I still keep to my plan. Try to keep doing the same things at the same moments, especially mentally.
"Today I felt at some moments I was out of place but I have been able to recover properly, so it was a good effort."
Garcia Rodriguez carded a 67 thanks to three putts from outside 20 feet on the back nine but gave the credit for his performance to his work off the tee.
"I played very solid from the tee the first nine," he said. "The back nine I played very solid with the irons and putter.
"The key for today is the driver was always in position on the fairway.
"The putts were so difficult, the greens were a little bit slow and the wind made it terrible."
