Carlsson makes second round impact in Portugal

Magnus A Carlsson made a fine start to his second round to take the lead at the Portugal Masters.

Portugal Masters - Round Two

The Swede was six under for the day at Oceânico Victoria Golf Course to go nine under for the tournament after 13 holes.

After a 69 yesterday Carlsson made consecutive birdies at the second and third and followed that up with another at the par five fifth.

He picked up another shot at the 509 yard par four seventh to complete a magnificent front nine 32 and his good form continued after the turn with a birdie at the 11th.

And when he picked up a birdie at the par three 13th for the second day running Carlsson had opened up a two shot lead.

In hot pursuit were Paul Lawrie of Scotland, who was seven under through 11 and five under for the day, England’s Ross Fisher who was two under for his round after 11, overnight leader Stuart Manley who was level par for the day at the turn and France’s Jean-François Lucquin who had played his first 11 holes in two under par.

Play had to be halted for a short time this morning while a marshal was rescued from a lake.

The man was on duty at the seventh as Jean van de Velde - famous for his water exploits in the 1999 Open at Carnoustie, of course - came to the hole.

He lost his balance and fell in and because he could not swim another marshal went into the lake to perform a rescue act.
