European Senior Tour Member Roger Chapman and playing partner Jay Don Blake birdied seven of their final nine holes to grab the second round lead in the Legends Division of 2013 Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf on the US Champions Tour.
Starting the day on the tenth, the pair were just three under par through nine, but Chapman birdied six holes in succession before Blake added a further gain on the eighth to post a combined score of 11 under par 61.
The duo will begin Sunday’s final round at Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa, in Savannah, one shot ahead of four teams including two who have won the event previously: Tom Watson and Andy North (in 2008), and Bernhard Langer and Tom Watson (2009).
Chapman will be playing in the final grouping for the third consecutive event. He finished tied tenth at the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic, and joint 13thin the Greater Gwinnett Championship.
The winning team will each receive a cheque for US$230,000, as well as 230 points in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup race.
Langer – who has won twice this year, including at last week’s Greater Gwinnett Championship – leads the race with 925 points, 309 in front of David Frost. Langer also sits on top of the money list with US$947,779 and should go over the US$1million mark in earnings on Sunday for the fifth time in six full seasons on the US Champions Tour.
