The South African, yet to win on The European Tour, turned in a sensational 30 and, despite being punished for his aggressive putting with bogeys at the 12th and 15th, he recovered with a birdie-birdie finish to sign for a nine under par 63.

Stenson started the day nine strokes ahead of the charging Coetzee and despite a trio of birdies on the seventh, eighth and ninth, he opened the door as he dropped a shot on the tenth.

The Swede was on 15 under after 11 holes, two clear of Coetzee and Merrick Bremner, who had equalled the course record to lead after the first round.
