Day three digest: Austrian Golf Open

Everything you need to know from Moving Day at Diamond Country Club.

Kaymer was playing it cool, Cañizares was popping corks, Catlin was feeling gluttonous and putts were going in from everywhere on day three of the 2021 Austrian Golf Open.

Here is everything you need to know from Saturday in Atzenbrugg.

Kaymer is biding his time

It's incredible to think that a player of Martin Kaymer's calibre has not won for seven years but a victory on Sunday would be his first since winning the U.S. Open in 2014. So, after firing a 69 to share the lead at nine under heading into the final day, were there any nerves? Not a bit of it. "It doesn't really matter what happens tomorrow, if you win or not it's nice to be in that position, to have an opportunity to win a golf tournament," he said. "Last year I had a couple of chances which I didn't use. More often as you get into that position I think you get more comfortable and then it's just a matter of time."

Cañizares ready to pop a cork

Like Kaymer, it has been seven years since Alejandro Cañizares claimed a European Tour title and he has twice been through the Qualifying School since then. Sitting alongside the German at nine under after a 70, a win would make the Spaniard the first wire to wire winner on the 2021 Race to Dubai. But he was happy just be back in a position to potentially take the crown. "If you told me going into the week I’m going to be leading by Sunday I would be having some champagne already, so it’s a good thing," said Cañizares. "I just need to keep doing what I’m doing, I’m hitting the ball good, I’m hitting my tee shots really well, my second shots well. I just need to keep calm, keep the head on my shoulders and just play my golf."

Catlin is hungry for more

You'd think after claiming two European wins just three weeks apart and putting yourself in a good position for a third within a year, John Catlin would be happy with his lot. But that would be to misjudge the American's ambition. Catlin heads into Sunday just two shots off the lead and desperate to make it a quickfire hat-trick of wins. "I think that’s the beauty of golf, I guess we’re kind of greedy in a sense," he said. "It’s never really good enough - you win once, you want to win twice; you win twice, you want to win three times and you win out here, you want to win a Major." Aim for the stars, John.

Putts being holed everywhere

It was a ding-dong battle with the putter between Kaymer and Cañizares all day. Kaymer holed an 18 footer on the tenth to edge ahead but Cañizares was not to be outdone and holed from twice that distance on the ninth. Then, at the 16th, Kaymer did this.

Paying tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh

Diamond Country Club fell silent for a minute at 4pm local time to pay respects to the Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away last week at the age of 99. Prince Philip was the husband of British monarch Queen Elizabeth II and his funeral was taking place in Windsor, just outside of London in the UK, on Saturday.

The silence was also observed across the UK and some players in Austria wore black ribbons in honour of an accomplished sportsman who served in the Second World War and was married to Queen Elizabeth for 73 years.
