Denmark power into World Cup lead

Søren Kjeldsen and Thorbjørn Olesen picked up eight shots in 11 holes to open up a two-shot lead for Denmark on day two of the ISPS HANDA World Cup of Golf.

The winds were still high at Kingston Heath Golf Club but with play switched from foursomes to fourballs, birdies were in order as 26 of the 28 teams were par or better for the week, with just six in red figures when the day started.

The Netherlands and New Zealand had set the clubhouse target at five under with rounds of 64 but the Danes were on course to go even lower after recording two eagles and four birdies to get to eight under.

That gave them the advantage over overnight leaders Spain - who turned in 32 - and China, who made four birdies in their first ten holes.

France were then alongside the clubhouse leaders at five under after turning in 32, a shot clear of Sweden, Chinese Taipei, Japan and the United States.

The Dutch pair of Joost Luiten and Darius van Driel began the day six shots off the lead but moved into a share with birdies on the second, fourth, fifth, seventh, eighth, 11th and 13th.

The Danes were next to make a big move as Kjeldsen holed out from the fairway on the third for an eagle before a birdie followed and Olesen put a stunning approach to tap-in range on the fifth.

China had parred the first but Ashun Wu holed a lengthy putt on the second and Li Haotong got in on the act as he repeated the trick on the third to get them four under early in their round.

They made it three in a row to open up a one-shot lead but the Danes then leapfrogged them on the eighth with Olesen chipping in from the front of the green to provide his team with a second eagle of the day.

An eighth birdie of the day on the 15th then moved the Netherlands alongside China in second, with not one of the 28 teams over par for the day.

China would soon find themselves in a tie for top spot again, though, with Li rattling home an eight-foot putt for birdie on the seventh.

Spain had led by one shot overnight and they had a slow start but a Rafa Cabrera Bello birdie on the fifth and one from Jon Rahm on the seventh had them back just a shot off the lead before an Olesen gain on the tenth from 20 feet nudged Denmark ahead.

It had been nip-and-tuck at the top all day and after the Netherlands finished their round with three straight pars, Rahm made another birdie on the eighth to get the Spaniards back within one.

The New Zealanders - Danny Lee and Ryan Fox - had turned in 31 with six birdies and two bogeys but made four further gains on the back nine having been five over after 11 holes on Thursday.

That was an eight under par round and Denmark hit that mark on the 11th as Olesen rolled in from close-range to make the lead two shots.
