• The Smurfit Kappa European Open will be celebrating it’s 30th year in 2007. The 29 previous events have produced 25 different winners, from 12 different countries, including eight Major Champions.
• Darren Clarke created European Tour history in the 1999 event when be became the first player to record 60 twice. The first time he shot the number was in the 1992 Monte Carlo Open. Seven years later he repeated the feat in the second round on The K Club’s Palmer Course, on his way to a tie for second place.
• Defending champion, Stephen Dodd became the third Welsh winner of the event. He followed Ian Woosnam (1988) and Phillip Price (2003). Dodd’s victory marked the first time on The European Tour that three different Welshmen had one the same European Tour event.
• Fresh from winning the US Open Championship at Oakmont Country Club, Angel Cabrera will try to follow in the footsteps of Retief Goosen, who, in 2004 won the US Open Championship and Smurfit Kappa European Open in the same year.
