- Tiger Woods is looking to make this third successful defence on the 2006 European Tour International Schedule, following The Open Championship and the WGC – Bridgestone Invitational.
- Woods is looking to win his 12th individual WGC event. To date his has won the WGC – Bridgestone Invitational five times; four times at the WGC American Express Championship and twice at the WGC – Accenture Match Play.
- To date Ernie Els, in 2004, is the only European Tour Member to win the event.
- The best finish by a European-born player is second by Miguel Angel Jiménez in1999, after losing out in a play-off to Woods, followed by Lee Westwood in 2000 behind Mike Weir and Thomas Björn in 2004 behind Ernie Els.
