• Defending Champion, Niclas Fasth, won for the second time on Spanish soil in 2006, having beaten John Bickerton in a play-off for the Open de España. His wire-to-wire victory in the Mallorca Classic was the fifth and final triumph in this fashion in the 2006 European Tour season.
• Spanish players have achieved remarkable success in this event. The tournament started in 2003 and was won by Miguel Angel Jiménez, 12 months later Sergio Garcia claimed victory and a hat-trick of home champions came in the shape of José Maria Olazábal in 2005.
