Having looked down and out in the final of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, swashbuckling Frenchman Victor Dubuisson conjured an extraordinary recovery from the desert which has been voted by My European Tour fans as the February Shot of the Month.
With his Championship match having gone in to extra holes against Australia’s Jason Day, the Turkish Airlines Open winner found what looked like an unplayable lie in a bush, only to hit a miraculous escape and halve the hole.
It was one of two unbelievable recoveries Dubuisson produced en route to an eventual 23rdhole loss to the Australian, but received a staggering 70 per cent of the My European Tour vote to secure the February prize.
Dubuisson’s final day escapes caused quite a stir within the golfing world, with US Ryder Cup Captain Tom Watson saying on Twitter: “Two of the greatest up-and/downs I have ever seen Victor!!!”While nine time Major Champion Gary Player added similar: “This is simply fantastic stuff!! @Vdubush is Houdini.”
High praise indeed, and the reason why Dubuisson’s desert heroics were voted so unanimously as the latest winner of the Shot of the Month prize.
Best of the rest was South Africa’s Thomas Aiken, who earned eight per cent of the vote for his winning putt during extra holes at the Africa Open, while the man he defeated in the play-off – Oliver Fisher – came third after an impressive drive at the same event.
One lucky My European Tour member earned themselves a brand new pair of FootJoy DNA shoes for picking Dubuisson’s fantastic effort, and the Frenchman will now join the running for the 2014 Shot of the Year crown alongside the previous monthly winner for December / January, Thomas Björn.
