The field of 156 for the Mercedes-Benz - South African Open Championship will comprise :
- Any past SA Open Champion under the age of 60.
- 55 players as determined by the Southern Africa PGA Tour.
- The top 55 entries from the 2000 PGA European Tour Category Ranking List.
- The top 50 players in the World Ranking as at 31st December 1999.
- The leading 23 players from the previous year's SA Open Championship.
- Maximum of 5 amateurs as nominated by the SAGA.
- Maximum of 5 invitations by the Southern African PGA Tour.
- Maximum of 2 invitations by the Open Championship Joint Operation Committee.
- Balance of field of 156 players from Qualifying Rounds, to take place on Tuesday, January 18, 2000, at Johannesburg and Kensington East GC and Roodepoort Country Club.
Note - These exemptions will apply up to the commencement of the qualifying round; thereafter the balance of the field will be made up of eligible players who are not otherwise exempt and who have successfully qualified through the qualifying rounds.
Note - Southern African players who are members of and exempt through both Tours will be entered through (2) above. Players from outside Southern Africa who are members of and exempt through both Tours will be entered through (3) above.
