Europe closed the gap on the US at The 37th Ryder Cup to a single point as Robert Karlsson and Justin Rose produced sensational performances.
Karlsson beat Justin Leonard five and three while Rose beat America’s Phil Mickelson four and two to bring the score to 10½ -9½ with nine singles game still in progress at Valhalla Golf Club.
Earlier Nick Faldo’s side suffered an early blow as Sergio Garcia – who struggled with his putter all day – went down five and four to rookie Anthony Kim in the opener.
Paul Casey got a hard-fought half of Hunter Mahan in an enthralling second game.
The American went one up with a monstrous 40 foot putt at 17, only to drive into the water at the last.
However, Faldo and Europe still had cause for concern with Henrik Stenson three down with only three to play against Kenny Perry and Oliver Wilson four down with four to play against Boo Weekley.
JB Holmes was all square with Søren Hansen in what was looking an increasingly important contest.
Miguel Angel Jiménez was two down to Jim Furyk, Stewart Cink and Graeme McDowell were level after 11 and Ian Poulter was three up through ten against Steve Stricker.
Lee Westwood and Padraig Harrington, looking to give Europe a strong finish, were two up on Ben Curtis and two down to Chad Campbell respectively.
Garcia, who has now lost four of his five singles matches, said: "Today was a hard day.
"I played against a guy who played awesome and it's hard when you are in one of those kind of situations. Unfortunately I just couldn't get anything right."
