FACTS AND FIGURES ABOUT WELSH GOLF

• Since 1972 Wales have staged many official European Tour events. The Victor Chandler British Masters (1973, 74, 76, 78, 80, 83); Welsh Golf Classic (1979-82); Epson Grand Prix of Europe (1986-91); Murphy’s Cup (1989); Celtic Manor Resort Wales Open (2000-02)

• Ian Woosnam was the last Welsh golfer to win on home soll on The European Tour, at the 1983 Silk Cut Masters at St Pierre

• Winners of official events since 1972 are: Brian Huggett, Ian Woosnam, Mark Mouland, David Llewellyn, Phillip Price and David Park

• Ian Woosnam, in partnership with David Llewellyn won the World Cup for Wales in 1987 at Kapalua, Hawaii, defeating the Scottish team of Sam Torrance and Sandy Lyle

• Woosnam has tasted success twice as the Individual winner at the World Cup, 1987 and 91, where, alongside Phillip Price they finished second behind Sweden

• Wales best performances in the Alfred Dunhill Cup was tied third in 2000 and fourth in 1985, 91

• Ian Woosnam is the only Welsh golfer to win a Major Championship at the 1991 Masters Tournament

• The best Welsh performance in the Open Golf Championship is second. Dai Rees (1953, 54, 61), Dave Thomas (1958, 66) and Brian Huggett (1965)

• Dai Rees had the honour of being Ryder Cup Captain five times (1955, 57, 59, 61, 67) . He captained the team to victory in 1957 at Lindrick – their first victory in the event since 1933. In 1961 he was the last playing captain of a Great Britain and Ireland team. Brian Huggett was at the helm for the last Ryder Cup match to feature Great Britain and Ireland in 1977, before the introduction of the European team in 1979

• There are eight Welsh golfers who are exempt on The 2002 European Tour International Schedule; Ian Woosnam, Phillip Price, Bradley Dredge, Mark Mouland, Mark Pilkington, Jamie Donaldson, David Park and Stephen Dodd.
