Fast start for Stal

France’s Gary Stal raced into an early lead when the KLM Open began before play had to be suspended in Zandvoort.

The Qualifying School graduate has enjoyed a consistent 2014, making 17 cuts in his 21 events on The Race to Dubai.

And the 22 year old former French Amateur Champion, carded four birdies at Kennemer Golf & Country Club to race to the turn in 32.

At four under par he led by one from Argentina’s Estanislao Goya and England’s Paul Waring, with South African Thomas Aiken, German Max Kieffer and American Brooks Koepka a shot further back in a tie for fourth.

Home favourite Joost Luiten was level par after 11 holes, while Ryder Cup star Thomas Björn was among the afternoon starters.

But play was suspended when Paraguay's Fabrizio Zanotti was hit on the head by a golf ball.

Zanotti, who won the BMW International Open earlier this season, was on the 16th fairway when he was injured by a ball struck from the 14th tee.

The 31 year old received treatment on the course and was then taken to hospital. Zanotti had started his round from the tenth at Kennemer Golf Club and was level par after six holes when the incident occurred.
