Fleetwood handed putting pontoon in Switzerland

Tommy Fleetwood proved that new is not always better with a stunning putting performance on day one of the Omega European Masters.

The Englishman is an excellent putter but felt in recent weeks his blade was not helping his stroke and, after consulting with coach Phil Kenyon, he took things back to basics.

Fleetwood's caddie Ian Finnis is a long-time friend and earlier in the season took to eBay to buy a limited edition short stick for £90.

The putter is the same type that Fleetwood used growing up and has the same neck as his old one but has been re-gripped and shafted by Finnis.

After Fleetwood took just 21 putts using it en route to a 65 at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Cub, we suspect it may be staying in the bag.

"I putted with a blade putter for about three years because I need the rotation, the release in my stroke," said Fleetwood.

"The last three or four weeks I've putted poorly. The putter I was using was fine when I was putting well but when I'm stroking it badly, it was literally making it worse.

"I did a bit of work with Phil this week. Tried this putter earlier in the year, which helped me with my lining up, and I put it back in. It was £90. Finno keeps saying it's his but I'm sure it was a gift.

"It worked really well today, nothing better than holing a few putts. It just eases everything off, gives you a bit more confidence going into the greens."
