Fyfe holds two stroke Danish Golf Challenge lead

Calum Fyfe will take a two stroke lead heading into the weekend of the Danish Golf Challenge at Bogense Golf Club.

The Scotsman fired an impressive eight under par 64 on day one and went on to sign for a five under par second round of 67, which included six birdies, to get to 13 under par for the tournament.

Fyfe sits one clear of Sweden’s Per Längfors after he posted a six under par 66 to move into contention after 36 holes.

After playing the front nine in one under par, the 27-year-old made gains on the tenth and 13th before picking up two more birdies on the par five 14th and par five 16th. Having opted to lay-up on both longer holes, Fyfe relied on his strong wedge game to get up and down.

“I am good with my wedges, so it was about getting myself in the right positions and try and get some spin on the ball to stop it,” he said.

“I am really pleased. I’m glad about how things have been going and hopefully that can continue.

“I am playing well and then whenever I am hitting the ball in the rough there’s not as much pressure because I feel I can lay-up and make birdie.”

Fyfe found the green on the par three 18th but left himself a testing par putt having nearly holed a downhill birdie attempt as he looked to extend his lead. After confidently finding the back of the cup, the Scotsman was delighted to avoid a closing bogey.

“I thought it was in the whole way but then it lipped out and rolled five feet away,” he said. “I had to regroup, hole it, and it was a good day’s work.”

Fyfe, playing alongside Dutchman Vince van Veen and Sweden’s Robin Petersson, finished his opening round in near darkness on Thursday evening, and was part of the first group out on day two. Despite the quick turnaround, the Scot was ready to keep the momentum going.

“Once I got here and got up in the morning, I was ready to go,” the former Tartan Pro Tour man added. “The gameplan is to keeping going for it, making sure I don’t quit, and see what happens.”

Sweden’s Längfors is in solo second on 11 under par, one shot ahead of Dutchman Lars van Meijel. Denmark’s John Axelsen is at nine under par, with compatriot Jonathan Gøth-Rasmussen, Czech Filip Mruzek and Swede Albin Bergstrom a shot further back at eight under.

The third round of the Danish Golf Challenge gets underway at 07:30am with Fyfe teeing it up in the final group at 12:02pm, alongside van Meijel and Längfors.
