Genworth Stats Pack - Summary Report

Ideal playing conditions for the final day of the Tshwane Open saw Dawie Van Der Walt emerge as the winner. We analyse his performance over the week, together with the performances of the other tournament contenders Darren Fichardt, Louis De Jager, Peter Uihlein, Björn Åkesson, Charl Coetzee and Danny Willett.

Dawie VAN DER WALT -21

Dawie Van Der Walt won the tournament and topped the Genworth Greens in Regulation statistic for the week in doing so (with 66/72 greens). He also managed five of the Par 5 greens in sub-regulation two shots to lead the Par 5’s in 2 statistic as well (alongside a few other players). Scrambling 6/6 on the holes where the green was missed, incredibly Dawie suffered just one drop shot over the entire tournament, on the 10th hole of the final round (from a 3-putt believe it or not). A truly remarkable performance and well deserved victory for the 30 year old South African.

Darren FICHARDT -19

It has been a busy but extremely lucrative start to 2013 for Darren Fichardt, who fell just shy of back to back wins on the European Tour with his second place finish. Over the week he converted 22 birdies against 3 bogeys, in doing so leading the Par 3 Scoring with a 2.63 average. The 37 year old South African and four time winner on the European Tour continues to climb the Official World Golf Rankings.

Louis DE JAGER -18

Louis De Jager did not arrive this week with too much form under his belt, so his third place finish will feel even better considering the Tshwane Open holds the year’s biggest purse for the Sunshine Tour. Looking at his Genworth Statistics, his game was solid all round without excelling in any one category. Most notably the 25 year old South African hit 80.6% Greens in Regulation and ranked very well in each of the Genworth Putting Statistics categories.

Peter Uihlein converted 1 eagle and 21 birdies against 6 bogeys, and was -10 for the Par 5 holes over the week. The 23 year old former world number one amateur is one to watch for the future. He was born in Massachusetts USA, went to school at Oklahoma State, and is a huge Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics fan.

Björn ÅKESSON -16

Björn Åkesson fired eight birdies over the final twelve holes for a round of 65 to finish tied 5th. Over the week he average a huge 318 yards off the tee ranking 2nd for the Genworth Driving Distance statistic, which then enabled him to hit five of the Par 5 greens in sub-regulation two shots and 83.3% of the greens (ranking 4th for Greens in Regulation). Björn also accumulated more birdies than any other player in the field, 24 in total (which equates to one birdie in every three holes).

Charl COETZEE -16

In comparison to Björn Åkesson, joint overnight leader Charl Coetzee could only manage two over Par for his final twelve holes of the tournament (that’s ten shots worse). The two players will be feeling very differently about their 5th place finishes on their travels home, one in jubilant mood and the other feeling very disappointed. A chance missed for the 26 year old South African.
