Gleneagles poised for exciting climax

A thrilling finish was brewing at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, with five players tied for the lead during the final round.

Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles - Final Round

Soren Hansen, Peter Hanson, Marcel Siem and Anthony Wall had all joined overnight leader Gregory Havret on ten under par.

France’s Havret, 11 under coming into the final day’s play, started confidently and birdied the second.

But nerves started to show as he dropped shots at the third and the fifth to be one over for the day through seven holes.

Swede Hanson - who moved into contention with a stunning 66 yesterday - birdied three of his first four holes but bogeys at the fifth and the seventh looked to have cost him dear.

But he bounced back by picking up shots at the eighth and ninth to reach the 12th tee three under for the day.

Wall, partnering Havret in the final group after an electrifying 65 yesterday, birdied the second but then like so many of his competitors dropped a shot at the difficult fifth. He was level par for the day after seven holes.

German Siem - ranked 445th in the world - bogeyed the first but birdies at the third and fifth have put him right in contention with ten holes left to play.

In the clubhouse Ross Fisher’s 66 has set the benchmark at seven under for the tournament, enough to put him in a tie for eighth.
