As is the case for so many events on the Race to Dubai schedule, the DP World Tour’s Golf for Good programme is in full swing at this week’s Bapco Energies Bahrain Championship. Now in its third year, the tournament – the third on the International Swing – will continue to build on the momentum of its previous two editions, prioritising sustainability and community-led initiatives.
As part of the programme, there are pioneering environmental initiatives focused on energy provision, including powering hospitality units and structures with solar energy and batteries.
This is expected to result in an estimated reduction in fuel consumption of approximately 25%, resulting in an estimated saving of 13,400kg of CO₂ compared to 2025.
Another key area of focus is plastic waste reduction, with free water refill stations installed around the course.
As part of its commitment to the United Nations Sports for Climate Action Framework, the DP World Tour is focused on implementing sustainable innovations at its events, to help reduce direct carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2040.
On Monday, the Careers in Golf programme - designed to promote diversity and inclusion - saw a workshop showcasing the wide range of career opportunities within golf take place at INJAZ Bahrain, a non-profit organisation whose mission is to inspire and prepare young people for employment and entrepreneurship.
Students from various local schools – coordinated through INJAZ - will subsequently visit Royal Golf Club on Thursday for a behind-the-scenes tour of the host venue, engaging with DP World Tour staff directly as various departments explain their role and responsibilities.
The DP World Tour has been a long-time supporter of the Special Olympics, which provides year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
Similar to other events in previous years, 20 athletes from the Bahrain Special Olympics team will visit Royal Golf Club on Wednesday.
One of the many great facets of events on the DP World Tour is the opportunity awarded to local players to impress, with Bahraini golfers Ahmed Alzayed, Khalifa Almaraisi and Ali Mohamed Alkowari teeing it up this week.
The three players earned their places through the Kingdom's national qualifying pathway, providing local players with invaluable experience of competing at the highest level.
A golf clinic will also be held for the Bahrain Golf Association and National team members.
Off the course, there is a full programme of entertainment in the Championship Village, including a 100-metre zip line, dedicated kids' zone, live music, a traditional Bahraini souq, and a wide range of food and beverage options.
