Alejandro Cañizares and Santiago Tarrio joined volunteers at Playa de Torreguadiaro, located in Sotogrande, for a beach clean as part of the European Tour’s Green Drive initiative.
Real Club Valderrama in Sotogrande plays host to the seventh edition of the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters this week, and in the build up to the event, volunteers and students from schools in the area joined forces to clean more than 300 kilogrammes of waste from the beach.
The Green Drive initiative reaffirms the Tour’s strengthened commitment to sustainability, with a vision for the Tour to became a showcase for social and environmental responsibility.
Every year, almost eight million tons of plastic waste ends up in the sea and its presence is extremely harmful to marine life, contributing to the reduction of biodiversity and the extinction of species. The team behind the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters organised the beach clean with a simple goal: to collect as much plastic and waste as possible.
"This type of action makes us all better, because in the end it is not only about playing golf, we must teach children the impressive values that golf has, and with initiatives like this we show a part of greater importance than golf, because we must respect the environment to respect ourselves, " said Tarrio.
Cañizares added: "It's amazing how much garbage is found on a beach like this, and we must become aware of once that we must take care of our environment, because that is taking care of ourselves as well. Hopefully this will be done beyond San Roque, Andalusia and Spain, because it is a global problem that we have to solve together, and it costs nothing to help and not pollute.”
The volunteers were rewarded for their efforts and commitment, with the first 200 participants receiving a ticket to enjoy the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters this Saturday.
