The second round was held up for more than two hours from 4.10pm local time as the wind caused balls to move on the course.

Vidaor said: "We knew it was going to be a windy day, however we were not expecting the stronger gusts that we've had from about 3.30 in the afternoon.

"We've been having sustained winds of 15-20mph, gusting 25 or high 20s, but suddenly from 3.30 onwards we've probably had a few gusts of 35-plus."

Joakim Lagergren had completed his round of 68 before the stoppage to set the clubhouse target at eight under par, but leading challengers Ricardo Gouveia and Richie Ramsay had played only four and five holes respectively.

The official reason given for the stoppage was "oscillating balls" but Vidaor laughed: "Not really oscillating, basically moving!

"Normally the rules of golf can deal with occasional ball moves, that's okay, but when it becomes widespread all around the course, that's when we deem the course to be unplayable.

"Specifically hole number five, because of exposure to the wind and the wind direction, was giving us a lot of problems. We tried to keep going for another 15, 20 minutes but the gusts keep coming back at 35, 36, 37mph, which was more than we expected.

"Even though, the greens, we have them at a speed where we felt - we knew - they could hold gusts of 25, between 25 and 30, but not beyond that.

"Obviously we've had referees out there measuring the wind strength, and the weatherman has got a few wind gauges out there at certain points on the golf course, elevated points."
