Scott Hend produced a sensational second-round 66 to grab a share of the halfway lead at the Fiji International.
The Australian carded an eagle, five birdies and a single bogey on Friday to join first-round leader Daniel Pearce, Gavin Green and Jason Norris at the summit on seven under par.
Australian trio Adam Bland, Peter Wilson and David McKenzie were another two shots back in a tie for fifth.
Early starter Pearce followed up Thursday's 66 with a battling 71 at Natadola Bay to head into the clubhouse with a two-stroke lead but his advantage was soon wiped out by two-time European Tour winner Hend.
The 44 year old began the day five shots off the lead but made the dream start to his second round, holing his monster eagle putt at the first before making birdies at the fourth, sixth and ninth to reach the turn in 31.
Hend picked up a shot at the 11th to move to seven under par and join Pearce at the top of the leaderboard.
Another birdie at the 16th saw Hend take the outright lead but he dropped his only shot of the day at the long 17th to head back to seven under.
After his round, Hend said: "We just tried to play stress-free golf in the wind.
"I missed a lot of putts but I still walk off the golf course with six under and in a good position at the halfway mark."
Pearce came into the day one shot clear of the chasing pack and by the time he reached the turn on Friday morning, he had extended his lead to three strokes.
But a double bogey at the 11th reduced his lead to one shot before another dropped shot at the next saw him fall into a tie for first place.
Pearce rallied, however, making two birdies in his last four holes to head into the clubhouse on seven under par.
After his round, he said: "It's always nice to be at the top. I can't complain about how things went today."
Norris reached the turn in 36 after carding one birdie and one bogey on the front nine before birdies at the tenth, 14th and 15th propelled him into contention.
The Australian dropped a shot at the 16th but finished his round in style, picking up another shot at the 17th before chipping in for a birdie at the last.
Speaking about his chip-in birdie, Norris said: "I said to my caddie 'this is the toughest shot of the day'.
"If I leave it a fraction short it rolls back to my feet so I was pretty happy to see it go in. I would have been happy to make a four."
Green, meanwhile, made two birdies on the front nine before adding another at the long 17th to complete a blemish-free 68 and join a four-way tie at the top.
He said: "I played pretty solid today. It was like yesterday but I didn’t make as many putts as yesterday. It was solid overall.
"I stayed really patient out there in the windy conditions. I had to grind on a couple of holes."
Harry Bateman made the 28th hole-in-one of the European Tour season at the 142-yard 15th on his way to producing a sparkling 66 which leaves him three shots behind the co-leaders.
Home hero Vijay Singh, meanwhile, added a level-par 72 to Thursday's opening 71 to remain at one under and safely make the cut.
