Lucas Herbert added a maiden PGA TOUR title to his two European Tour victories over the weekend after the Australian overcame difficult conditions to seal a one-stroke triumph over Patrick Reed and Danny Lee at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.
The 25-year-old has now won three titles in two years having already had two significant victories under his belt on the European Tour – he broke his duck at the 2020 Dubai Desert Classic after overcoming Christiaan Bezuidenhout in a play-off, and he doubled his trophy haul at this year’s Irish Open courtesy of a dominant three-shot victory.
Herbert showed his class in Bermuda in wet and windy conditions with a magical display of nous and guile around the greens, and a two-under 69 was enough for a 15 under total and a third professional win.
“It’s pretty unbelievable,” said Herbert. “It was one of those ones where you couldn’t let yourself get ahead of yourself and think you’ve won the tournament, because the conditions were so brutal you could have hit a shot off line anywhere or at any time.
“You had to be fluid with it depending on the conditions, earlier it was probably favourable to do some scoring but from six or seven that’s when the wind really picked up and from then on, it was probably more survival mode. Just get yourself into position on the fairways and the middle of the greens and try not too much pressure on the short game because it obviously wasn’t easy out there.”
His fellow European Tour member Patrick Reed and New Zealander Danny Lee shared second place on 14 under par, with the American former Masters winner having signed for an impressive final round 65.
