Home duo looking to grow the game

Pedro Figueiredo and Ricardo Gouveia are hoping the fun and innovation at this week's GolfSixes Cascais can help grow the game in Portugal as the country plays host to the event for the first time.

After two years being played in England, the GolfSixes moves to mainland Europe's very western tip at Oitavos Dunes, with Figueiredo and Gouveia carrying the home hopes in the six hole modified greensomes format.

Portugal has been a mainstay of the European Tour International Schedule for many years but has never seen anything like this before, and Figueiredo is hoping to bring a whole new audience to the game.

"I think it's great," he said. "I think it brings another type of public to the game and I think that's what's needed, a bit more of a broad spectrum in terms of people who are watching golf and following golf and I think this tournament certainly does that. Hopefully the results in that aspect will be very positive."

Along with the innovative format, the popular shot clock hole returns with players having 30 seconds to take their shots while the final hole will provide something special for players and fans alike.

The tee box will sit directly over a swimming pool surrounded by an open lounging area for VIPs and fans, while a DJ will be blasting out music throughout.

Gouveia is no stranger to Oitavos Dunes and while he admits there will be some pressure on the Portuguese team from the home fans, he cannot wait to take on the challenge.

"We'll have a bit of pressure coming up playing in front of home crowds," he said.

"There's a mix of short par fours with some tricky par threes. The fifth hole - which is the actual 18th on the course - has always been a tough par four.

"Then you have the last hole which is going to be a lot of fun from what I've heard. It's going to be a different experience to what we've had at previous GolfSixes."
