His record might suggest otherwise but Jorge Campillo enjoys the challenge of The Belfry.
Since the Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo moved to the venue in 2021, the Spaniard has missed the cut in each of his last three appearances. But not this time.
After a flawless five-under-par 67, on the back of an opening 68, in the second round over the Brabazon course, Campillo is one shot adrift of clubhouse leader Tyrrell Hatton as he looks to claim his fourth DP World Tour title.
"I enjoy playing here," he said. "I missed the last three cuts in this tournament, but I played here four years ago (in the ISPS HANDA UK Championship) and I played good.
"It's a good challenge. You have some nice par threes, a few short par fives that you can birdie. Also, strong par fours.
"I enjoy it. Really nice golf course. Makes you think off the tee, and to go for the greens is very nice."
As Campillo references, he does have some good memories from this week’s host venue having finished tied seventh when Rasmus Højgaard won the UK Championship.
Starting his second round from the tenth tee, Campillo made three front-nine birdies, before making back-to-back birdies at the seventh and eighth on his way.
“It wasn't very good off the tee and in middle of the round, but I hit my irons quite good and made some long putts, so that made it easy,” the World Number 128 reflected.
Campillo is making just his fifth DP World Tour start of the season after playing on both sides of the Atlantic this year after earning a PGA TOUR card through the Race to Dubai Rankings last year.
He made 17 starts on the US-based Tour, with three top 20s and a best of tied fourth at the Myrtle Beach Classic as he missed out on qualifying for the FedEx Cup PlayOffs.
Now, back on European soil, Campillo is relishing the chance to play at familiar locations as he looks to climb the DP World Tour's season-long rankings.
"Way too many trips over the Atlantic," said Campillo. "But it was a good experience.
"But it's definitely nice to be back, especially when you get a day like this in the U.K. and crowds like this, it's very nice."
