Kaymer makes his move

Former champion Martin Kaymer and Swede Peter Hanson moved into a one shot lead on the third day at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship.

Abu Dhabi Golf Championship - Round One

After play was delayed for two hours due to early morning fog, Kaymer, who landed his maiden title over The National Course in 2008, stormed out of the blocks with a hat-trick of birdies to boost his chances of bettering last year’s runner-up finish.

Hanson began the day tied for second a shot adrift of halfway leader Rick Kulacz and has yet to drop a shot at Abu Dhabi Golf Club.

He joined Kaymer at 13 under par with back-to-back birdies over the opening six holes of his second round.

Kulacz, who stormed into the second round lead after blazing 11 birdies in a nine under par 63, remained at 12 under par and was joined by The 3 Irish Open champion Shane Lowry and World Number Ten Rory McIlroy firmly in the hunt.

Lowry, second overnight alongside Hanson and Sergio Garcia, kicked off his round in fine style with consecutive gains but just a second bogey of the week halted his progress, while McIlroy picked up three birdies over his opening eight holes.

Ian Poulter improved to 11 under par with a run of early birdies, while big-hitting Spaniard Alvaro Quiros, who will defend his title in Qatar next week, also moved to within two of the lead.

World Number 13 Garcia, though, slipped off the third round pace with an early double bogey dropping the Spaniard to nine under par alongside Søren Hansen, Chris Wood, Ariel Canete, Richard Green and Challenge Tour Number One Edoardo Molinari.
