Kim eyes Iskandar glory

In-form American Anthony Kim will take his new-found confidence into the US€2million Iskandar Johor Open, where he will be bidding to claim his debut European Tour title.

Kim, one of America’s hottest properties, will tee up at Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, alongside defending champion Padraig Harrington of Ireland, Europe’s 2010 Ryder Cup-winning Captain Colin Montgomerie, The 2010 Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa and Sweden’s Henrik Stenson.

The 26 year old, a three-time PGA Tour winner, hopes he can finally land a title in Asia after finishing tied third at both the CJ Invitational hosted by K.J. Choi in October and, more recently, at last week’s Barclays Singapore Open, which was won after a play-off by Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño.

“My form’s been good lately,” said Kim, whose parents were born in Korea. “I’ve been able to find my game and build up some confidence, which has made a big difference.”

“I’ve now got much more confidence that my approach shots will end up near the pin. As far as my technique goes, not much has changed. I did some good work the day before flying out to Asia. I hit a couple of solid iron shots, which I’ve not been hitting, and also some fades with the driver, which is nice.”

Victory at the Iskandar Johor Open, which will mark his final competitive outing of the season, would almost certainly see Kim climb from his current position of 70th in the Official World Golf Rankings into the all-important top 50.

“That’s the goal,” he said. “Obviously playing in the Majors is very high on my priority list. I’m just trying to get better every single week, and it seems to be happening. I just need to play better and hopefully give myself a chance to win this week.”

Kim will be joined at the magnificent Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club by his fellow US PGA Tour champion Camilo Villegas of Colombia.
