Koepka leads as Fleetwood makes big move

Defending champion Brooks Koepka edged into a one-shot lead in the final round of the US Open but Tommy Fleetwood was making a charge through the field at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

Koepka started the day in a share of the lead and made two birdies in his first four holes to get to one over as he looked to become the first man to successfully defend the year's second Major Championship since Curtis Strange in 1989.

Masters Tournament winner Patrick Reed was his nearest challenger after birdieing four of his first five and Race to Dubai champion Fleetwood was six under through his first 14 holes.

World Number One Dustin Johnson was alongside Fleetwood at three under, with Matthew Fitzpatrick a further shot back.

After the controversy of Saturday when the lead moved back seven shots, the greens were watered and the pin positions were more inviting, with lower scoring a distinct possibility.

Rickie Fowler had fired an 84 on day three but he proved that a charge through the field was possible, going 19 shots better with a 65 before any of the leading groups had teed off.

Fleetwood made a fast start with the putter, holing a 50-footer on the second and a 19-footer on the third to get to seven over. A stunning approach to the sixth set up another gain and a nice tee-shot into the next had him within two of the lead before he dropped a shot on the ninth.

Fellow Englishman Fitzpatrick was another man to turn in 32 thanks to an approach to six feet on the first, taking advantage of the par five fifth and another smart second into the eighth.

Those starts paled in comparison to Reed, however, who was inside ten feet on the first, second and third to move into a share of the lead.

Koepka soon changed that, holing a 20-footer on the second to edge ahead at two over.

Fleetwood needed a response to that disappointment on the ninth and he holed another long putt on the 12th before leaving himself a tap-in on the next and he was two off the lead again.

An approach to seven feet saw Fitzpatrick join him there but Koepka was in even tighter on the third and the 28 year old led by two.

Fleetwood would not be shaken off, however, as he holed another 20-footer from just off the front of the 14th green to join the group in second.

Reed then got up and down from the sand on the fifth for a fourth gain of the day.

Johnson birdied his first four holes, as did Swede Henrik Stenson who was at five over.

Daniel Berger and Tony Finau had started the day in a share of the lead but the final duo both bogeyed the second and third to slip four back alongside Stenson.

Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Justin Rose and Webb Simpson were five shots off the lead.
