Luiten joins the lead at The Dutch

Local favourite Joost Luiten hit the top of a congested leaderboard early on day three of the KLM Open at The Dutch.

Joost Luiten - just one off the lead heading into the weekend at the KLM Open

Impressive crowds have flocked to Spijk all week and Dutchman Luiten delighted them in round two with a 64 that moved him just one shot behind second-round leader Bernd Wiesberger.

A birdie on the first saw the 2013 champion hit the summit after four holes with Wiesberger registering four pars, while Nino Bertasio also had a share of the lead after a gain on the fourth.

South African Brandon Stone was making the big move of the morning to sit just a shot off the lead at nine under alongside Richard Bland, Alejandro Cañizares, Simon Khan and Richard McEvoy.

Two birdies in his last three holes on Friday had moved Luiten to within touching distance and he gave the home crowd something to cheer about early with a 15-footer on the first to move to the top of the leaderboard alongside Wiesberger.

Italian rookie Bertasio then made it a three-way tie at the top as he birdied the par three fourth hole for the third time this week.

Stone was coming to the end of his third round but he picked up seven shots in 16 holes with birdies on the first, third, fourth, seventh, tenth, 14th and 15th.

Englishman Bland was in the final group last week in Switzerland and birdies on the first, fifth and seventh had him contending again, while countryman McEvoy made gains on the first, sixth and seventh.

Another Englishman, Khan, had gains on the second and sixth, and Spaniard Cañizares made a single birdie on the first.

Ben Evans, Mark Foster, Scott Hend, Joakim Lagergren, Soomin Lee and Mike Lorenzo-Vera were then at eight under with 28 players within four shots of the lead.
