Rewind

Last year, two-time defending John Jacobs Trophy winner Colin Montgomerie capped off a superb season with victory at Constance Belle Mare Plage, finishing three shots ahead of South Africa’s David Frost.

Montgomerie set a new course record with his second round seven under par 64 en route to his eighth European Senior Tour title. The former Ryder Cup Captain also secured the 2015 Shot of the Year award with his hole-in-one on the par three 17th hole.

The Scotsman also denied England’s Paul Wesselingh a hat-trick of Mauritian victories. Wesselingh, winner of the John Jacobs Trophy in 2013, secured the fourth title of his Rankings-winning season with a five-stroke victory over Frost.

The field

With 48 of the European Senior Tour’s top players taking part in this year’s MCB Tour Championship, it comes as no surprise that there are 31 European Tour winners who will be teeing it up at Constance Belle Mare Plage. In addition, 33 of those 48 players are former Senior Tour winners, so there’s no doubting the pedigree of this year’s field.

The aforementioned Montgomerie returns to Senior Tour action to defend the title he won last year, and he is one of ten former Ryder Cup players in the field. Joining him are 2016 Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex winner Paul Broadhurst and two-time Ryder Cup Vice Captain Des Smyth amongst others. Phillip Price, one of the heroes of The 2002 Ryder Cup when Europe regained the coveted trophy will make his Mauritius debut after his runner-up finish at the Senior Italian Open Presented by Villaverde Resort moved him up the money list into 35th place.

David Frost - going well on the final day of the MCB Tour Championship in Mauritius

David Frost, a two-time winner on both the European Tour and Senior Tour, and three-time European Tour winner Jean-François Remesy have received invitations to this year’s event.

The course

At 6,614 yards, the Legends Course at Constance Belle Mare Plage is certainly no end-of-season walk in the park for the Senior Tour members gracing the Mauritian fairways. Designed by seven-time European Tour winner, and former Senior Tour player, Hugh Baiocchi, the Legend course sits on the east-coast of Mauritius and it will come as no surprise that water plays a big part on a number of holes.

The course is set within a former hunting reserve and deer are seen roaming freely around the course during play.

The signature hole is undoubtedly the par three 17th, the site of Colin Montgomerie’s hole-in-one last season. At 166-yards, it is played over a bay with spectacular views of the mountains and Indian Ocean, to a tricky green guarded by bunkers.
