New award launched at Italian Open to recognise success of young talent in honour of Franco Chimenti

A new award is being launched at this week’s Italian Open to support the growth and success of young and emerging talent.

Franco Chimenti-605680528
Franco Chimenti was the President of the Italian Golf Federation for 22 years

In memory of Franco Chimenti, the former President of the Italian Golf Federation who died at the age of 85 last year, the best young player – born on or after January 1, 2000 – at the national open will receive a trophy and a cash prize of €25,000.

Established by the Franco Chimenti Foundation, and in agreement with the Italian Golf Federation and the rules imposed by the DP World Tour, the Memorial Franco Chimenti award will be held annually and presented during Italy’s biggest golf event.

        Criteria for the award:

He is a player, Italian or foreign, registered for the 2025 Italian Open

He was born on or after January 1, 2000

        He has made the cut

He has completed the 72 regulation holes, or the number of holes that may have been reduced by the tournament director due to unforeseen circumstances

In the event that two or more players born after January 1, 2000, achieve the same score, the trophy will be awarded to the player with the best score in the final round. Should the scores remain tied, it will go to the best second-to-last round, and so on, in descending order of rounds played. If a complete tie still persists after applying these criteria, the trophy will be awarded to the youngest player

If the player who achieves the best score holds amateur status at the time of the award, they can claim the trophy, while the cash prize will be frozen and collected by the player upon his transition to professional status and at his explicit request.

The Italian Open - which celebrates its 82nd edition this year - marks the fifth and penultimate event of the European Swing on the DP World Tour.

Back in the Tuscany region for the first time in more than 40 years, the tournament is making its first visit to Argentario GC.

Germany's Marcel Siem is the defending champion, having beaten Tom McKibbin in a play-off 12 months ago at the Adriatic Golf Club.
