No 'Jips' for Wagemans while Arabella Offen sets Beat the Pro record

Golfers live in fear of the "yips" - but a sound-alike first name proved no barrier to success for Jip Wagemans on Saturday at the 2025 KLM Open.

The short par-three 11th hole at The International in Amsterdam played host to a Beat the Pro contest sponsored by ABN AMRO and Wagemans, event producer for the host agency TIG Sports and Events, took the spotlight for himself as the week's only winner.

A host of others tried their luck - including the youngest ever Beat the Pro challenger, four-year-old Arabella Offen, as Sunday was left to junior players - but the honours belonged to Wagemans.

Taking on the group of Rafa Cabrera Bello, David Ravetto and Dylan Naidoo, Wagemans clipped a low, straight effort into the left of the green which just held up on the slope to allow the green smiley face paddle to finally make an appearance.

Wagemans only took up the game three months ago and plays off a handicap of 54. While his less than classical swing may have betrayed that inexperience, there was no argument with the outcome.

Inci Mehmet, part of the DP World Tour commentary team, also tried her luck on Saturday against the leading group of Joakim Lagergren, Connor Syme - who could be heard before the shot saying: "I think you're going to do it!" - and Ricardo Gouveia.

A strong effort had her colleagues in the box on tenterhooks but Inci was just edged out by Syme - no shame in that, as the eventual champion went on to hole his birdie putt and claim a share of the tournament lead with Lagergren at that stage.

Speaking at the following hole, Inci said: "This is much better, familiar territory with a mic in my hand rather than a golf club! I've got to admit I was pretty nervous, shaking after the shot."

Lonneke Fiolet and Ruben van Sommeren produced the best efforts of day one, though Corné Brunt marked his birthday with an unfortunate shank and Feijke van Rappard's bobbling effort into the sand drew a laugh from honorary tournament director Ruud Gullit as the footballing great guested in the commentary box.

Sunday's junior section brought some impressive showings as Raphael Smith, a very youthful sub-nine handicapper, hit a fine shot onto the green but was shown the red paddle after a strong effort from the professionals in his group.

The aptly-named Danielle Young almost found the green with another excellent effort. Giel ten Hoove, 15 and with a handicap to match, finished things off in impressive style but was facing an impossible task after Francesco Laporta's shot to two feet.

Thijmen Huiberts clattered the grandstand on the right but was immediately given a ball by Angel Hidalgo as a memento of his day.

And the diminutive Arabella, clad head to toe in her favourite colour pink and hitting a miniature driver with a cross-handed grip, was recognised by the announcer on the tee for the straightest effort of the day. It may have found the bunker but it earned her cheers from the crowd and high-fives and gifts from playing partners Marcel Siem, Lucas Bjerregaard and Alejandro Del Rey.

Thank you and well done to all who took part across the four days. None more so, of course, than Jip Wagemans - remember the name!
