Orr Defends Victor Chandler British Masters

Gary Orr will attempt to join an exclusive club at Woburn Golf and Country Club this week when he defends his title in the Victor Chandler British Masters.

Only two players in the long and distinguished 55 year history of the event have ever won the tournament in successive years, former Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher in 1974-75 and double Open champion Greg Norman in 1981-82.

Now Orr has the chance to follow in the footsteps of the illustrious duo after his victory last season on the Duke's Course at Woburn, the foundations for that success being laid with a course record 62 in the second round.

In the end, the 34 year old Scot won by two shots from Per-Ulrik Johannson with Colin Montgomerie a shot further adrift in third to claim his second title of the 2000 season, and Orr and Montgomerie will line up again this year, albeit on a different course.

For the first time, The Marquess Course at Woburn will be used for a European Tour event, having been opened for play on June 5 last year.

Designed by Peter Alliss, Clive Clark, European Golf Design (Ross McMurray) and Alex Hay, the course, named after the Marquess of Tavistock, is a joint venture between PGA European Tour Courses PLC and The Bedford Estate.

At 7214 yards, it lies within 200 acres of mixed woodlands, overlapping the county boundary dividing Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Lofty pine, beech, spruce, sweet chestnut and oak trees tower above a variety of holes designed to test the best golfers in Europe.

Ken Schofield, Executive Director of The European Tour, said: "All who have been involved in the design and construction of The Marquess Course, and those fortunate enough to have played it, share the belief that it has the credentials to become the finest inland course in England."

Amongst those vying to prise the title from Orr's grasp aside from Montgomerie are Darren Clarke, Michael Campbell, Thomas Björn, and the 2000 Volvo Order of Merit winner Lee Westwood.

The 28 year old Worksop golfer, winner of 14 titles on The European Tour, has played five times in the event, his best finish being fourth behind American Bob May on the Duke's Course in 1999, the first year of Victor Chandler's sponsorship.
