Danny Willett credited playing more practice rounds as the key as he made an impressive start to the defence of his Omega European Masters title.
The Englishman lifted the trophy at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club last year and has since gone on to win the Omega Dubai Desert Classic and memorably the Masters Tournament at Augusta National.
An opening 65 on Thursday had him right in the mix at a course which he admits suits his eye, but he believes practising on the course rather than the range was vital to his form.
Because I played enough rounds at home, I feel like my game is there or there abouts - Danny Willett
"I have just been out playing golf with my caddie recently," he said. "He told me that I've got to be playing more during my weeks off instead of hitting loads of balls. We played four or five rounds.
"Luckily, because I played enough rounds at home, I feel like my game is there or there abouts. You're hitting a few more shots instead of hitting perfect shots. I think that really helped.
"This is one of the places where you have to get it into position off the tees. I got the ball into play on the first few holes and felt a little bit better.
"After six holes I made a few good golf shots. This course suits my eye for some reason, it always has. I rolled the ball well and didn't quite expect a 65 this morning.
"If the wind blows, the greens are faster and firmer. You can get out of position pretty quick. If you can get to 13 or 14 under at Crans, I don't think you will be far away. There are guys day-to-day who shoot six or eight under but rarely do the guys put four of them together. Out of nowhere this course can jump up and bite you."
I know I can come and shoot a score round here - Andrew Johnston
Andrew Johnston was also five under in his second appearance at the event after missing the cut last year, and he believes that experience has stood him in good stead.
"I had a good day out there," he said. "I started off really badly last year. I was five over after nine holes and I managed to claw it back to level par so I said to myself, 'I know I can come and shoot a score round here'. I kept that in mind.
"I drove the ball pretty well, my pace putting was pretty good as well. Any time I was coming up and across slopes, I thought I was good there, leaving myself tap-ins. It was good."
