The Barracuda Championship is the only event on the PGA TOUR or DP World Tour schedule which uses the Modified Stableford scoring system, with players receiving two points for a birdie, five for an eagle and eight for an albatross, and deducted one point for a bogey and three for a double.

Filipino Hoey carded seven birdies with a single dropped shot to move to 26 points, one ahead of 2021 champion and DP World Tour winner Erik van Rooyen and American Max MacGreevy, who tallied 16 points in the round of the day.

Frenchman Tom Vaillant was leading the DP World Tour charge at Tahoe Mountain Club on 23 points.

"It was nice," he said after recording eight birdies and a bogey for 15 points. "Not easy this morning with how cold it was, but just a nice round.

"Just steady the whole day and just tried to stay on the fat side all day long and tried to have as many birdie opportunities as I can because greens are pretty good."
