Ian Woosnam produced a spectacular finish when he holed a birdie putt of 25 feet at the 18th hole to force a play-off with Andrew Coltart, and then at the third extra hole faced virtually the same putt and made it for victory. During an afternoon when at one stage no fewer than nine players were separated by one shot, Woosnam, lying third after 54 holes, moved through the field with an eagle three at the par five second and birdies at the fourth, 11th, 15th and 18th. Coltart followed four successive birdies from the sixth with more at the tenth, 13th and 14th to tie with the Welshman on 272, 16 under.
