The Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play saw some thrilling matches on day one as the 64-man field was halved to 32 in the first round.
Here, we take a look at what some of the winners had to say after they advanced in Bavaria.
Matthew Southgate (beat Romain Wattel 3 and 2)
"I was literally 15 minutes away from teeing off and I just heard something in the head (of his driver) so I took the screw out of the bottom of the head and when I went to rejoin it, it just broke. I've had it for a long time, it's like the old faithful. Chris Paisley was hitting balls a few bays behind me and I said, 'Chris, are you done for the day?', and he said, 'yeah', so I hit a few with his and it felt okay. His is set up a lot flatter where he's so much shorter than me so I really squatted into my knees every time I hit driver but I've done enough to win the match. Big thanks to Chris for the driver to get me through it."
Edoardo Molinari (beat Robert Karlsson one up after 24 holes)
"It was a very long game. Robert played quite good in the beginning and I was struggling on the front nine. On the back nine I started to play well and then we both had a mess on the 18th. In the play-off, Robert had a few chances early on then I had a few chances on two and three and eventually I was lucky to come out on top. It was a difficult match. When none of the two players are playing well it's extremely difficult to hit good shots because you keep looking at the other player and you lose your focus a bit. In match play you never know because tomorrow is another day and maybe I can play as good as I did yesterday (in the pro-am) and all of a sudden you're shooting 65s."
Florian Fritsch (beat Oliver Fisher one up)
"It was almost like going down the stretch on a Sunday playing for the win and that is something that I've struggled with the most. So to go up head-to-head with Oli Fisher with him putting pressure on me the whole day and to pull it off on the 18th, on a hole that is quite interesting with the water hazards and everything, to do it this way really feels good. Halfway through the round it looked like he was going to run away with it, I was able to make a few birdies to keep him from going three or four up and it makes a huge difference whether you're only two down or four down so I was able to turn it around."
Marcel Siem (beat Julien Quesne 2 and 1)
"My driving was really good, I found something, finally I got my length back. I thought at 37 I can't hit it that far any more but somehow 20 yards came back which is good at match play. My irons were not that good on the front nine. On the back nine Julien and I, we had quite a tight match there and I'm very, very happy on German soil to go through the first round. I'm so fired up, I want to win, my game's back, hopefully the crowds are coming out and I'm always inspired by the people."
