Scott Continues Perfect Record as a Last Day Leader to Conquer Sweden

Adam Scott claimed his fourth European Tour International Schedule victory in just his 66th event by shooting a three under par 69 to win the Scandic Carlsberg Scandinavian Masters by two shots from Englishman Nick Dougherty.

The Australian continued his superb record of winning when leading or sharing the lead after 54 holes and finished with an 11 under par total of 277 at the Barsebäck Golf and Country Club.

In his previous three European Tour victories – starting with the 2001 Alfred Dunhill Championship – he lead by one and triumphed by one over Justin Rose. In 2002 at the Qatar Masters, Scott lead by three and won by six before The Diageo Championship at Gleneagles when he was five in front after 54 and eventually won by ten.

“It was a real relief to go out and play well today,” said the 23 year old after picking up his first prize of €316,660 to take his European Tour career earnings to over €3 million since he turned professional in 2000.

“I somehow managed to keep myself calm but there were some really crucial times out there when I had to hole some putts to keep myself in front and I was pleased that I managed to do that.

“Hopefully I can go on from here. This win will get me back into the running for a place in the Presidents Cup team and I would still like to make the team.”

Dougherty secured second place on his own by birdieing the 18th and moving out of the pack of players on eight under.

The 21 year old elevated himself above Scotsman Andrew Coltart, his compatriot Luke Donald and Sweden’s Robert Karlsson to secure a cheque for €211,110 that will guarantee his European Tour card for the 2004 International Schedule.

Miguel Angel Jimenez had the lowest round of the day – a 67 that took him from joint 25th into a tie for sixth place on seven under, but the day belonged to Scott, who, at the age of 23 is the youngest Australian to win four events on The European Tour.

He is also the first Aussie to win the Scandic Carlsberg Scandinavian Masters, but given that he was tied fourth in this event at Barsebäck Golf and Country Club in 2001 and tied sixth at Kungsängen in 2002, that should come as no surprise to those who have followed Scott’s wonderful progress as a professional.
