The 2010 Ryder Cup is underway

The 2010 Ryder Cup is underway with rookie Dustin Johnson hitting the opening tee shot in front of thousands of fans gathered on the first tee of The Twenty Ten Course at The Celtic Manor Resort.

Rapturous applause greeted all the players, the loudest roars reserved for the home team, and it was left to Johnson, the first rookie to hit the opening shot since Paul Lawrie in 1999, to strike the first blow.

It is known as the most nervous shot in golf and Johnson, taking the driver, pushed his right into the crowd.

But Masters champion Phil Mickelson split the fairway and the Americans are underway.

Westwood asked his Captain to let him lead from the front and the roars went up as he stepped up to the tee and sure enough, the World Number Three delivered a perfect drive down the middle. Martin Kaymer, the US PGA, followed straight behind and the chants of Europe, Europe reverberated around the course. The 2010 Ryder Cup is on.
