When is the US PGA Championship?

The US PGA Championship is the second of the four men's Major Championships and will take place from Thursday, May 14 to Sunday, May 17, having held a spring spot in golf's global calendar since moving from August in 2019.

There will be three practice days held on the Monday to Wednesday leading up to the event when players will also face the world's media.

Where is it being held?

Aronimink Golf Club is hosting the US PGA Championship for just the second time and first in 64 years after Gary Player won his third Major Championship there in 1962.

The club was founded in 1896 out of the Belmont Cricket Club as the Belmont Golf Association in south-west Philadelphia.

It would take the name Aronimink Golf Club in 1900 and after two changes of location, moved to its current Newtown Square home in 1928.

Designed by Donald Ross and restored by Gil Hanse from 2016 to 2018, the current course has also hosted the Women's and Senior PGA Championships, becoming the first venue to complete that set.

It has also played host to three PGA TOUR events: the 2010 and 2011 AT&T National and the 2018 BMW Championship.

How many players are in the field?

A field of 156 players will contest the US PGA Championship.

What is the format?

The US PGA Championship is a 72-hole individual stroke play tournament contested over four rounds.

Who is playing?

Due to the structure of its exemptions and field size, it is often said the US PGA Championship has the strongest field in golf and 2026 is no exception. To find out who will be teeing it up in Pennsylvania, click here.

How many players make the cut?

Players must be in the top 70 places, counting ties, to make the 36-hole cut.

What is the play-off format?

In the event of a tie for first place after 72 holes, there will be a three-hole aggregate score play-off on the tenth, 17th and 18th. If still tied, there will be a hole-by-hole play-off, where the 18th will be repeated until there is a winner.

Wanamaker Trophy

What does the winner receive?

The 2025 US PGA Champion will have his name inscribed on the Wanamaker Trophy.

Lewis Rodman Wanamaker, an American businessman and heir to the Wanamaker's department store fortune was the driving force behind the creation of the Professional Golfers’ Association of America in 1916 and commisioned the trophy which takes his name.

Standing at 29¼ inches tall, 10½ inches in diameter, 27 inches across its handles, and weighing 34 pounds, it is one of the grandest and most recognisable prizes in the game.

What is also at play for DP World Tour members?

There are a total of 10,000 Race to Dubai ranking points to be played for, with 1,665 going to the winner assuming they are a DP World Tour member.

Who is the defending champion?

World Number One Scottie Scheffler was the champion 12 months ago, claiming his third Major Championship at Quail Hollow.

Opening rounds of 69-68 had him in contention heading into the weekend before a third-round 65 catapulted him into a three-shot lead.

He extended his advantage to five early on Sunday before a fightback came from Jon Rahm, who briefly drew level at nine under.

But Scheffler found his form on the back nine to again pull clear, eventually winning by five shots on 11 under.

He would go on to win also win The Open Championship, replicating the 2024 Major double of Xander Schauffele and when the action gets under way at Aronimink, he will have been World Number One for just a week shy of three years.

What are some of the key storylines heading into the event?

All eyes will unsurprisingly be on Scheffler and World Number Two Rory McIlroy, who betwen them have won four of the last five Majors.

McIlroy arrives having recently defended his crown at the Masters Tournament and will be eager to pick up Race to Dubai points as well as the Wanamaker, as he currently trails Patrick Reed in his hunt for a record-equalling eighth season as Europe's Number One.

Scheffler, meanwhile, will be looking to become the first player to successfully defend the title since Brooks Koepka in 2019.

There is also a career Grand Slam on the line, with Jordan Spieth making his tenth attempt to join golf's most exclusive club since his 2017 Open triumph.

The Asian Swing once again provided a route to the US PGA with the top three players from the Rankings securing their place and those spots went to Mikael Lindberg, Bernd Wiesberger and Jordan Gumberg.

Lindberg is one of four DP World Tour members making their Major debuts along with Angel Ayora, Kota Kaneko and Jayden Schaper, while Dan Brown, Alex Fitzpatrick, Jordan Gumberg, Daniel Hillier, Casey Jarvis, Kristoffer Reitan and Adrien Saddier are all US PGA Championship first-timers.
