Vince van Veen fires stunning 59 at INFINITUM

Vince van Veen fired the magic number of 59 on day three of DP World Tour Qualifying School Final Stage to catapult himself over 100 places up the leaderboard at INFINITUM.

The Dutchman started the day 148th out of the 156-man field and had a mountain to climb to make the 72-hole cut and ensure European Challenge Tour status for next season.

But after birdieing the first at the Lakes course he never looked back, adding a further three gains on the front nine and eight on the way back to come home in 28 and move up 126 places into a tie for 22nd.

With preferred lies in place after heavy rain early in the week, Van Veen's effort will not enter the history books but that will be of little concern if he can be in the top 20 and ties after six rounds and secure his place on the DP World Tour for next season.

"It's the last thing that you think about," he said.

"I was more thinking about 'can I drop some putts?' because that was the thing I've struggled with for the first two days, the pace on the greens. I've ended up three-putting a few times.

"I've shot between eight and ten under a few times this year so I thought that this golf course is a little bit more forgiving off the tee. I think if I can shoot eight under I at least have a chance to be there for the final two days with another low one so that was what I had in mind.

"So it's just trying to prepare for a solid round, really, see if I can shoot a nice number but 59? I've never had a putt for 59 in my life so this was brilliant.

"On my tee-shot (on the last) I blocked it right because I wanted to make sure at least I had a chance to lay up and create a chance for 59."

Van Veen's 59 was 15 shots better then his opening effort on the Lakes and on day four he will head to the Hills Course, where he fired a 73 on day two.

"Tomorrow I'm not playing the same golf course where I've just shot 59 so that will help me to refocus and regroup," he added.
