Westwood out to make history in Stockholm

Three-time winner Lee Westwood is determined to preserve his 100 per cent record at Bro Hof Slott Golf Club this week as he attempts to create more history in the Nordea Masters.

The Englishman boasts a phenomenal record at this tournament, triumphing in 1996, 2000 and 2012 while also finishing runner-up once and inside the top 20 three times in his eight appearances.

Another victory for Westwood at Bro Hof Slott GC, where he won by five shots on his only appearance in 2012, would see him become the first player to win the event four times.

Westwood, playing the first two rounds alongside Henrik Stenson, said: “I just always seem to play well here.
The last time I won in Europe was here and it was also my first win on the European Tour, so it’s always been good to me.

“I’ve never won a tournament four times, I’ve had a couple of three-timers so it’d be nice to create more history here this week.

“I remember I turned up quite late last time (in 2012) and just had the one practice round in the Pro-Am.

“I went out and shot a low one in the first round, think it was a 64, then carried on from there and ended up winning by four or five.”

Westwood kick-started his excellent record at the Nordea Masters by winning his first title 20 years ago in Lohja.

Asked about his memories from 1996, the 43 year old said: “I made a great putt from the front edge on the second hole of the play-off and I remember running across the green and high-fiving my caddie, 'Scotchy', and I don’t think Russell Claydon was too impressed with me.

“That’s about all I can remember really, the rest is a bit of a blur.”

The 43 year old, who is playing the first two rounds in the company of home hero Henrik Stenson, heads into his quest to overtake fellow three-time champion Colin Montgomerie in confident mood.

He finished joint runner-up in the Masters Tournament in April, and followed up that superb effort at Augusta National with top ten and top 15 finishes in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open and the BMW PGA Championship respectively.

“I’m hitting the ball well but I’d obviously like to make more putts on the greens, as would we all,” Westwood said.

“But tee to green I’ve been very good recently and my chipping has also been great so I’m just waiting for everything to come together and hopefully that can be this week.

“I’m on the right lines, as my results have shown, so there’s no reason to change too much. The main thing is to keep enjoying my golf, which I’m doing at the moment.”
