Just like his compatriot Brandon Stone the week before, Haydn Porteous showed composure beyond his years to claim a maiden victory at last week's Joburg Open. A steady bogey free 69 in the final round saw the South African rookie make three birdies and 15 pars on route to a two-shot victory over the largest field of the season.
Haydn’s putting proved to be the strongest weapon in his bag last week as he led the field in putts per GIR with a 1.541 average. Using an Odyssey, Works Versa 1W he averaged just 26.3 putts per round, the second best in field.
The young South African was no slouch off the tee either, averaging the fifth longest in field at 312.38 yards using a Callaway, Great Big Bertha 8.5 degree driver.
From tee to green Haydn hit 70.4 pre cent of the greens in regulation using a set of Callaway, Apex Pro Irons (3-9). His recovery game was also in good shape as he averaged 83.3 per cent recovery for his sand saves and this may be the result of his decision to carry four wedges in his bag - namely a set of Callaway, Mack Daddy 2 wedges comprising of a 47° pitching wedge, a 52° gap wedge, 56° sand wedge and a 60° lob wedge.
