Tennis fan Colin Montgomerie, who attended Wimbledon last week to assist in his relaxed build-up to the Smurfit European Open, called for new balls – and served up an impressive opening round in his bid to win one of the few prestigious European Tour titles to elude him so far.
Lee Westwood, who came from seven shots back going into the last round to win the 1999 Smurfit European Open, returns this week to defend his crown against a field of the highest quality at The K Club, County Kildare.

Advance ticket sales for the Smurfit European Open will commence on May 2nd, and will close on June 23rd.
Lee Westwood claimed his 12th European Tour title and pushed his official earnings through the £4 million barrier when he defended the Smurfit European Open at The K Club with a closing 66 – the lowest round of the day – for a 12 under par total of 276.
