Challenge de Cadiz: Tournament Guide

The fifth edition of the Challenge de Cádiz takes place at Iberostar Real Club de Golf Novo Sancti Petri in Cádiz, Spain, from May 29 – June 1, and here is what you need to know before play begins on Thursday...

Seve design

Seve Cadiz

Iberostar Real Club de Golf Novo Sancti Petri was the first course in Spain to be designed by the great Severiano Ballesteros. The picturesque layout is located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, on the beautiful beach of La Barrosa in Cadiz and has become one of the best-known golf resorts in Spain.

The front nine of Iberostar Real Club de Golf Novo Sancti Petri’s “A” course is designed on open, exposed land along the Mediterranean coastline and the signature par four sixth hole requires players to hit into a raised green overlooking the beach. The back nine is played inland and provides a greater challenge as players must navigate their way through tight avenues of pine trees. The 17th hole, at 463 yards, is the longest and toughest par four on the scorecard and players must think strategically off the tee due to a giant tree positioned in the centre of the fairway.

Elite facilities

Practice Cadiz

Real Novo Sancti Petri Golf Club boasts some of the best practice facilities in the south of Spain with a grass driving range that has been extended to provide more than 130 spaces and 27 are equipped with sheltered facilities. The golfers’ paradise contains three practice holes, short game practice areas including a bunker, four practice greens and a par three course, providing players with everything they need to develop every aspect of their game.

Past success

Kristof Ulenaers (5)

The Challenge de Cadiz has produced some memorable moments since its inception in 2020, which saw Pep Angles claim an emotional maiden HotelPlanner Tour victory on home soil. The Spaniard posted a closing three under par round of 69 to reach 14 under par and win by one-shot in Andalucia before going on to finish third on the Road to Mallorca Rankings and secure his DP World Tour card.

Kristof Ulenaers sent shockwaves through the golfing world in 2021 as he secured a convincing five-stroke victory at the Challenge de Cadiz on his first professional start. The Belgian led the field at Iberostar Real Club de Golf Novo Sancti Petri after every single round in Spain to claim one of the most remarkable victories in HotelPlanner history.

In 2023 Sam Hutsby came out on top in a six-man play-off to secure his first HotelPlanner Tour title for over eight years at the Challenge de Cádiz. The Englishman carded a one under par final round of 71 to move to a 15 under total alongside Italian Filippo Celli, Denmark’s Nicolai Kristensen, Swede Jesper Svensson and Frenchmen Clément Berardo and Julien Sale before a dramatic play-off unfolded as Celli, Berardo and Kristensen fell at the first hurdle before Hutsby made par at the third extra hole to defeat Sale, who could only manage a bogey.

Last season Jonathan Gøth-Rasmussen held his nerve to secure victory at the Challenge de Cádiz and join his father in the HotelPlanner Tour winner’s circle. The 2016 Junior Ryder Cup player is the son of Jacob Rasmussen, who won the Torneo RCG de Sevilla in 1993, and he was delighted to triumph in the same country as his father.
