Luiten pleased to stay in touch

Local favourite Joost Luiten was happy to grind out a score and stay in contention on day one of the KLM Open at The Dutch.

Luiten was playing in the gentler morning conditions and fired a two under par 69 to sit four shots behind first-round leader Ben Evans.

The 30 year old has four European Tour wins - including one at this event in 2013 - and was satisfied with a bogey-free effort on a day when he admitted he was fighting his swing.

"It was a decent result today," he said. "I was struggling with my swing and really trusting the swing, especially in the early part of the round so today was quite tough mentally.

"The main positive for me today was that I didn't make a bogey and when you do that you are going to stay in the tournament. The crowds were great out there and hopefully I can give them a little more to cheer tomorrow."

The best performing Dutchman on day one was amateur Rowin Caron who was also bogey-free in a five under par 66.

The 23 year old has made five European Tour appearances - all of them in this event -  and he was not scared to talk about the possibility of winning his home Open

"I am really happy," he said. "I hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens so in some ways it was a pretty easy round. The wind got up a little bit later in the round but I was playing well so it was a solid round.

"I have played here at The Dutch a lot so it helped me a lot today to know the course so well. I like the course a lot and have played well here in the past so I am just enjoying myself.

"The game plan is always to try and win the tournament - every time you tee it up in any event that is the goal. That is everyone's goal. It would be really nice to win my national Open but I don't want to get too far ahead of myself."

Austria's Bernd Wiesberger was also five under and he echoed the sentiments of playing partner Luiten as he failed to find his very best golf.

"It was a good start and we just had a lovely day with great weather and little wind," he said. "It was funny because I was struggling to find fairways most of the day so to make that score was pleasing.

"It was great to play with Joost, though - the crowds were great and we managed to make some birdies for them near the end."
